Friday November 19, 2021 Aaron Barksdale-Burns, tenor & John Mueter, piano performing Franz Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin Opus 25 - Liederkreis / Song Cycle - (The Lovely Millmaid) with poetry by Wilhelm Müller (translation available) 12:00 pm - 1:05pm Westport Presbyterian Church 201 Westport Road; Kansas City Missouri, 64111 (free admission, please wear a mask) Considered by many to be the pinnacle of the German Lied (Art Song), Schubert's song cycle tells of a young miller's apprentice whose unrequited love leads to obsession, morbid fantasy and ultimately his suicide. |
Tenor Aaron Barksdale-Burns has appeared in various operas, concerts and recitals both at home and abroad, including a performance of John Dowland's ayres with Joe Carignan-Garcia at Westport Center for the Arts in 2019. Aaron has an affinity for artsong and is excited to perform Die Schöne Müllerin in its entirety. He's a linguist and educator in Kansas City.

John Mueter is a vocal coach/collaborative pianist, retired after 25 years of teaching at the UMKC Conservatory followed by 5 years at the KU School of Music. He spends his time writing short fiction and poetry, with nearly 30 stories and poems published, and dreams of travelling again. Website: johnmueter.wordpress.com.

Musical Bio: In concert Aaron has performed at private venues across Europe and the United States, including the tenor solo in Haydn's Mass in Time of War with the Kansas City Symphony, has been featured with the Kansas City Puccini Festival and regularly performs recitals including recent programs featuring Irish composers and poets, the ayres of John Dowland and Schubert's Die Schöne Müllerin. Aaron performed the role of Sylvan in the North American premiere Philip Glass's space opera The Marriages Between Zones 3, 4 and 5 to a libretto by Doris Lessing with DePaul Opera Theater. Other opera experience includes principal roles in Our Town, Amahl and the Night Visitors, The Gift of the Magi, the Mikado and Street Scene with the Civic Opera Theater of Kansas City; Manon, La Rondine, Hänsel und Gretel, Hin und Zurück, Cosí Fan Tutte with UMKC Opera Theater and Cosí Fan Tutte, Carmen, The Merry Widow, The Magic Flute, Die Fledermaus, Dido and Aeneas, Street Scene and The PIrates of Penzance with DePaul Opera Theater. Aaron also performed as a puppeteer and supernumerary in The Magic Flute at Lyric Opera of Kansas City collaborated as the French language coach and prompter for Carmen.
